In the spring 0f 2009, my command made a port of call in Marmaris, Turkey. It was the first of three stops in Turkey. We were on a deployment in the Mediterranean Sea. We had been in Italy, Greece, Cyprus. We also went to the Black Sea. During our first stop in Turkey, I discovered why Turkey was an interesting place. We were in a majority Muslim country, but also a secular nation. Turkey is a crossroad between Europe and Asia. I saw sites from the New Testament in this country. We went to see belly dancers in Marmaris.
Turks also have representations of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. There are statues and pictures of this man in a lot of places. He is the father of modern day Turkey. During this deployment, I was dry for the entirety of it. I did not consume any alcohol, and it felt great. While perusing through the picture, my memory was triggered. It is part of my story.
